Using the "Hole-in-One" card - Play Nine

For those of you who don't recognize "Play Nine" you may have heard of golf.  I've been told they are essentially the same thing, simply different countries of origin.  Our copy comes from our Canadian Grandma and is, therefore, the Canadian version: Play Nine, though the strategies should pertain to both.

I chose Play Nine as our strategy tip post today because the best card you can draw: the "Hole-in-One" is slightly more red than the others and therefore deserves its place in the REDD WEEK line up!

The object of the game is to get as few points as possible.  As you can see from the cards behind the -5 there, it's not at all uncommon to be dealt some very high cards.  (yes this was random and it worked out well).

Since I drew the -5 from the draw pile I may replace any card from my personal set, face up or otherwise.  Typically, I find it unwise to replace a facedown card with anything valued 4 or greater.  Since the -5 is less than four this could make sense.  However, with four cards revealed, the round is roughly half over, and I still have three very high cards.

The only way to get negative points besides drawing a -5 is to match the cards on the top and bottom row with each other and get two matching pairs in this manner.  Because I have 12's (the highest value in the game) in two different spots I have a good feeling about being able to get additional 12s to get that bonus.  Therefore, I would want to replace the 11 instead of one of the 12's.  I do want to start getting rid of points as the game is past its crest, but the 12's could have value to me yet and so I settle for the 16 point reduction to my overall score.

The overall idea is to get rid of as many points as you can, without ruining your chances for future gains as well.  I would rarely use a -5 to replace a facedown card as it could be another -5 that you throw away.  The "Hole-in-One" is a great way to get rid of some heavy point values really quick! Use it wisely and it may just be the difference in the outcome of the game.
